Isn’t it lovely to live in a country where you can walk on mass through a city centre waving banners, shouting slogans and blowing your whistle? That’s what I did today; I joined number 1 in the right to work march in Birmingham, because it’s no good just sitting at home and moaning about it, you have to get out there and be counted. The planned route was changed; we were to march passed the ICC where the Lib-Dems are holding their conference, but we weren’t allowed to because a fence had been put up due to the fear of car bombs, I may go back in the week and run past blowing my whistle, but somehow I don’t think it would have the same effect. It all went off quite well, there were lots of police around, at one point I thought this must be what its like to be a royal being escorted like this. But seriously folks, go on a demo and be counted. After the rally we headed to the pub where number 1 treated me to a spot of lunch, very nice scampi and chips at The Old Contemptibles, then onto Lightwoods park for a spot of out door music, but the PA system was playing up and number 1 was tired, *tut* these ‘young uns’ can’t keep up, so we headed home.
I quite enjoyed my day protesting, I am only sorry I left it until I was in my 50s to do it.
🙂
Mrs Pankhurst would be proud of you.
The trouble is when protests get taken over by thugs and mayhem ensues but I’m sure yours was peaceful and sincere.
Pat there was over 1000 people on the march and no trouble at all.
“. . run past blowing my whistle. . .”
Don’t forget to wear your ARP tin hat and carry your gas-mask. I wouldn’t advise putting up a sign that says “DANGER! Unexploded Bomb” though, cos I’ve heard that the Lib-Dems can’t take a joke, and it’s not funny sitting in the Tower waiting for your appointment with the Royal Executioner.
Hi Keith,
I shall bear that in mind for the next time.
