Well it happen, and just before I tell you all about that I want to show you what I made to give the bride instead of the usual horse shoe. A little bride and groom which I had great fun knitting and dressing. (I wanted something different and personal; she gave us two gorillas dressed as a bride and groom when we married)
and then because I enjoyed doing that I asked number 1 if he wanted to give her a plastic sweep or should I make him one. He said he would rather have a hand made one which meant I could play again. YEA.
Right for me the big day started on Friday when I iron shirts/trousers/jackets/dress or should I say tried to, what a day for the iron to decide to give up on life; I had to resort to a bowl of water and tea towel to steam iron them. Then I thought a posh day called for posh nails, (and as I don’t have any, I stuck some on), struth, I don’t know how I ever got anything done with long nails before, they are a pain in the backside, still they looked nice. On the Saturday morning, I started early on my make-up, and it’s just as well. I had decided to wear false eye lashes, (mine no longer exist, something else that apparently happens as you get older). It took me for ever to get them right, because you see I can’t see without my glasses on and you can’t stick eyelashes on with your glasses on. So it was stick it on, put glasses on, take glasses off, take lash off re-apply again and again and again. I got there in the end. Everything packed in the car we headed to the grooms moms house to have photos taken with the groom, (now brother-in-law) and the ushers, (hubby and B.I.L. brother), best man and B.I.Ls mother, and to pick up said B.I.Ls mother and brother. Mother was dropped at the sis-in-laws house and we popped in to have a little look at the bridesmaids, the B.I.Ls daughter looked stunning, but then that’s not hard for her, she is gorgeous and the little one was just so cute and every bit a princess, which is good as that’s what she had told everyone she was going to be. Then we headed off to the church. The church is a lovely old one with high ceilings and wonderful stain glass windows, with a small pathway leading to it, which gave a few problems photo wise on the way out as everyone was quite tightly packed together. As sis-in-law walked down the isle it brought a tear to the eye, she looked lovely and brother-in-law scrubs up quite well to. The service was nice to, quite laid back but still very traditional. The first hymn I had never heard before and was called Come to a Wedding and sang to the tune of Morning has broken, and then came my bit.
(1 Corinthians Chapter 13)
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
* I am glad that I walked around the house for weeks rehearsing,
* I am glad I remember number 1s advice of ‘Don’t be frightened to breath’
* I am glad that I put big green dots on my notes to remind me to pause and not read it like I was catching a train which the vicar said always happen if you are not used to public speaking.
* But most of all I am glad that I am such a short-arse that I couldn’t see over the lectern so I couldn’t catch anyone’s eye and the only thing the congregation could see was my hat, and no I didn’t speed up thanks to the dots.
Vows were said, songs sang, responses made, prayers said, register signed, tears were shed, photos taken, then off to the reception.
I will tell you about that tomorrow
Just read The Magic toyshop by Angela Carter. After the death of her mother and father Melanie and her sister and brother are sent to live with her uncle an evil domineering toy shop owner, who terrorises his wife and her two brothers, how will it all end? You will have to read it.
😉
God you are so brave – false eyelashes and nails. I wouldn’t dare – they’d be off in a trice – probably drop in the soup.
Love the little figures you made – perfect!
I read the same piece at our son’s French wedding – but not in French!
Hi Pat,
There was a time I wore false nails and lashes all the time and they would fall off quite often, but they make them a lot better now, haha.
It’s a nice reading.
Funnily enough, that was the same reading as at the funeral I went to today. It was the one my mother chose for her funeral too, but she wanted the King James’ Bible version, where it was faith, hope and charity.
Hi Z
We had the King James’ version at our wedding and that was the version I started practicing
Awww I loved the little figures spesh the chimney sweep ! Glad to hear the speech/lesson went well though I never had any doubt… That was a good hint about pausing … you do need to breathe hehehe.. Will you be showing any photos ??
Hi Kate
More people have faith in me than I do, a lot of people said after it was a lovely reading and I did it well, but never had any doubt that I wouldn’t. I did, lots, I thought I would cock it up.
As far as photos go we are still getting them all together, then I shall ask if people mind if I show them.
