How would you like to find this on the side of your trash can!!!!!!! (or anywhere!!!!) —
This is pretty interesting….
Coconut Crab (Birgus latro) is the largest terrestrial arthropod in the world. It is known for its ability to crack coconuts with its strong pincers in order to eat the contents.
It is sometimes called the robber crab because some coconut crabs are rumored to steal shiny items such as pots and silverware from houses and tents
The second photo gives you a good idea of how large these crabs are – a coconut crab is seeking food from a black trash can.
The coconut crab is a large edible land crab related to the hermit crab, and are found in the tropical Indian and Pacific Ocean. They eat coconuts for a living! How would you like to be on an island and come across a crab that is more than 3 feet from head to tail and weighs up to 40 pounds, with a pair of large pincers strong enough to open coconuts! They can climb trees too, but they only eat coconuts that have already fallen to the ground. Coconut crab meat has been considered a local delicacy.
And we’re afraid of spiders??!!!!
😉
Oh my Lord lom, That beats the spider that Rob saw years ago hands down …
It was 10 years ago when Rob discovered the spider in the bathroom of our previous house – he swore that when it spied him it stood on it’s hind legs and dared him to swat it with something !!!
It made such an impression on him that he ‘still’ relates his fright… As for this coconut here God knows what Rob would do …… Probably jump out of the window hehehe … and yeah I mean Rob, he’s terrified though he would never admit it …
When I read it the first thing that came to me was, if this was up a tree and it fell on your head it wouldn’t half hurt! haha. Imagine it chasing you up the road.
Thanks for your nudge chez-moi. Yes, everything’s fine -I’m just being lazy about blogging – kind of lost the urge.
Anyway, what a strange creature that crab is, and provided it wasn’t it attack mode and close to me I think I’d be less afraid of it than I am of spiders.
Hi Sandy, glad to hear everything is ok
That is the scariest thing! I would still be running! I am sitting here with chill bumps on my arms just looking at it. I am terrified of spiders but this thing takes the cake. Now, I am looking around me for spiders…… Hope you have a good week.
you could get a lot of crab sandwiches off it though
